Early settlers had to have water, shelter and food to survive. If a creek or river was not close by they would hand-dig a well. Then they would build a barn to shelter their livestock, often with a loft above for the family to sleep. They hunted for food to sustain them, and worked on building a cabin which often had a dirt floor. A luxury was a fireplace for cooking and warmth. I think of these brave homesteaders when I photograph old cabins and barns. I hope all their hopes and dreams came true.
